das "opensource archive" ist eine eigenständige und aktive sammlung innerhalb des archivs der akademie der bildenden künste münchen. es handelt sich dabei um ein künstlerisches experiment, bei dem das digitale prinzip "open source" auf ein analoges archiv übertragen wurde. das bedeutet, dass dritte zugriff zum archiv bekommen, um daran kollektiv arbeiten zu können. dieses kollektive Arbeiten umfasst unteranderem das modifizieren, editieren, remixen und sampeln der in der sammlung befindlichen kunstwerke, die dem archiv von kunstschaffenden alle für forschungszwecke gestiftet wurden.

ausgehend von jacques derridas annahme, dass die technische struktur eines archivs den zu archivierenden inhalt beeinflusst, werden im opensource archive neue möglichkeiten der speicherung von informationen durch das öffnen der speicherungsprozesse eines archivs mit ästhetischen mitteln erprobt. diese ästhetische forschung in richtung einer 'technologie des gemeinsamen‘ (david m. berry) soll neue, demokratische und nachhaltige methoden der informationsspeicherung, der kulturellen produktion sowie soziale und politische praktiken hervorbringen.
kernstück dieser ausstellung war ein schenkungsvertrag, der die übertragung der von dominik bais ausgestellten werke in das archiv der akademie regelte. im vertrag wurde die schenkung der werke an mehrere bedingungen geknüpft: zum einen an die gründung der neuen sammlung "opensource archive", dessen grundstock die geschenkten arbeiten bildeten. zum anderen an grundlegende, aber zum teil utopische bedingungen, die in mehreren paragrafen aufgelistet wurden und den vertrag zu einer art manifest des archivs machen.
archive sind durch ihre informationsspeichernde tätigkeit zukunftsprägende institutionen und somit gesellschaftliche essenzen. eine aktive gestaltung der strukturen unserer archive hätte das potenzial einer mitbestimmung an unserer zukunft. dabei soll das opensource archive nicht als alternative für herkömmliche archivierungsstrategien gesehen werden, sondern viel mehr als experiment zur generierung von erkenntnis, um eine solche gestaltung dieser strukturen zu schaffen.
the opensource archive is an independent and active collection within the archive of the academy of fine arts munich. it is an artistic experiment in which the digital principle of open source has been transferred to an analogue archive. this means that third parties are given access to the archive in order to be able to work on it collectively. this includes modifying, editing, remixing and sampling the artworks in the collection, all of which were donated to the archive by artists for research purposes.
based on jacques derrida‘s assumption that the technical structure of an archive influences the content to be archived, the opensource archive explores new ways of storing information by opening up the storage processes of an archive with aesthetic means. this aesthetic research towards a ‚technology of the common‘ (david m. berry) aims to produce new, more democratic methods of information storage, cultural production, and social and political practices.

the opensource archive was founded in 2018 in the course of my final exhibition. the centrepiece of this exhibition was a donation contract that regulated the transfer of my exhibited works to the academy‘s archive. in the contract, the donation of the works by me was linked to several conditions: on the one hand, to the founding of a new collection called opensource archive, the foundation of which was formed by the donated works. on the other hand, there were fundamental but partly utopian conditions, which were listed in several paragraphs and made the contract a kind of manifesto of the archive. at present, the project is being presented at international congresses and conferences with a focus on collections and archives. through their information-storing activities, archives are future-shaping institutions and thus social essences. actively shaping the structures of our archives would have the potential of co-determining our future. in this context, the opensource archive should not be seen as an alternative for conventional archiving strategies, but as an experiment to generate knowledge in order to create such a design of these structures.
